New Grant Fund to Boost Business Growth in Portishead and Portbury
29th October 2025
Businesses in Portishead and Portbury are invited to apply for a new funding opportunity designed to support local economic growth, create more jobs, and build better business resilience.
Grants ranging from £500 to £10,000 are available to eligible businesses, start-ups, sole traders, and social enterprises based in the area.
Funding is available on a first-come, first-served basis and can be used for a wide range of activities including digital marketing, equipment upgrades, premises improvements, staff training, innovation, and job creation.
The fund was established through an agreement linked to the redevelopment of the former Severn Paper Mill site, securing £152,942 to help support economic growth in the area. It is managed and overseen by North Somerset Council, Portishead Town Council and Together Portishead.
A recent Portishead Business Survey revealed that 73% of local businesses plan to grow or expand. The fund aims to help overcome common barriers to growth, such as access to finance, lack of suitable premises, and recruitment challenges.
Applicants are encouraged to contribute match funding, although this is not a requirement. Priority may be given to proposals that demonstrate wider community benefits, such as sustainability or health and well-being impacts.
Councillor Mark Canniford, North Somerset Council’s Cabinet Member responsible for economy, said: “This fund is a practical way to help businesses thrive and build resilience in a changing economic landscape. We’re excited to support local enterprises that are ready to grow, innovate, and make a positive impact in the community.”
Paul Gardner, Chair of Portishead Town Council said: “We would really encourage local businesses to apply for grants from this funding. It could be a great way to help to achieve that vital next stage of growth.”
Rachel Nash, Together Portishead’s Director, said: “We are proud to stand alongside North Somerset Council and Portishead Town Council in bringing this important funding to the area. Together Portishead encourages all local entrepreneurs, from start-ups to established enterprises, to seize this opportunity to innovate and grow. Apply early and let’s boost our local economy together!”
The Portishead Economic Development Fund operates as a rolling grant scheme, with applications reviewed on an ongoing basis by the Portishead Town Council Community Matters and Town Assets Committee. Businesses are advised to apply early to avoid missing out.
