New cycle commuting opportunities available soon!

22nd May 2024

The long-awaited Pier to Pier Way is nearing completion and is due to open by the end of June.

Fencing, signage and path works have nearly been completed on the 13-mile cycle route linking Weston-super-Mare and Clevedon, and we are working hard on the final safety checks needed to get the route open for the summer.

The route, which forms the central section of the vision for a North Somerset Coastal Towns Cycle Route, is aimed at commuters, leisure users and tourists.

The Pier to Pier Way features quiet roads and traffic-free sections and once open will provide the missing link in a high-quality route that will stretch from Brean to Clevedon. Longer term, we aim to extend the route to Portishead, which has onward links to Bristol.

A short missing link is also due to be built over the coming year at North End, Yatton, to connect the Strawberry Line with the Pier to Pier Way.

Employers can help reap the benefits by promoting the route to staff – whether as a healthy, reliable, fun and cost-effective way to get to work, or for leisure.

While the full 13-miles is a long cycle commute, many potential commuting journeys are much shorter. Clevedon to the J21 Enterprise area, or Worle to Kenn Business Park are both a flat 9-miles. For most regular cyclists this is a comfortable 45 min ride, and with an ebike this can take very little effort. Once the link to Yatton is complete this will be an 8-mile pleasant ride.

If employees feel they don’t have the confidence to cycle, free adult cycle training is available. If employees would like to try cycling but don’t have a bike you can ‘Borrow a Bike’.
