Becoming an Employer of Choice

12th January 2022

Becoming an Employer of Choice is becoming a higher priority for many organisations. UK job vacancies have hit record highs making it the “best time in 50 years to look for a new job” according the James Reed, chairman of recruitment agency Reed Recruitment. Lockdown led to many revaluating their careers and changing or leaving jobs in what has been coined “the great resignation”. This means that attracting and retaining talent has become noticeably more challenging for many businesses.

Here at North Somerset Council, we launched our Employer of Choice project in December 2020 and have since reached nearly 130 young people through various interventions such as work experience, Traineeships, and the Kickstart Scheme. These initiatives help to provide our residents with skills, confidence, and experience, preparing them for the workplace and employment with our local businesses.

These initiatives can also be harnessed to encourage residents to consider a career with your business, helping with recruitment and succession planning. Barriers such as remote working can be intimidating, but we are keen to share our learning and support you to become an Employer of Choice, allowing you to attract and retain the talent that you need.
