Showcase Spotlight: Katie’s Journey Into Construction

Katie’s interest in labouring began while working alongside a family member, sparking a desire to pursue a hands‑on career in construction. Last year, she was referred to Opportunity North Somerset for support in finding meaningful employment.

At the same time, Octavius had just begun work on the Winterstoke Bridge project. During a meeting with Opportunity North Somerset, a labouring vacancy was mentioned. Claire, Katie’s Employability Support Officer, shared the opportunity with her – and Katie was immediately keen to apply.

To help her take the next step, Katie was booked onto an online CSCS course with Weston College. She found the course engaging, worked hard, and passed her test on the first attempt. Her determination paid off again when she was invited to interview with Octavius. Katie made a strong impression, demonstrating both her enthusiasm and her growing knowledge of the industry. Octavius offered her the labouring role shortly afterwards.

During the interview, Katie was open about having previously experienced burnout and asked whether she could begin on a three‑day working pattern. Octavius agreed, and with their support she quickly built her confidence and stamina — moving to four days a week and then to full‑time hours within a month. Her line manager has remained incredibly supportive, reassuring Katie that she can request leave whenever she feels things are becoming overwhelming. This experience reflects Octavius’ ongoing commitment to creating an inclusive and understanding workplace.

Since joining the team, Katie has continued to grow her skills, completing her PTS (Personal Track Safety) qualification and a banksman/traffic marshal course, with a cat and genny course planned for the near future. Her new job has also enabled her to afford driving lessons, and she has now passed her test — giving her the independence to travel to new sites and progress with the company.

Ben, Katie’s manager, described the recruitment process through Opportunity North Somerset as straightforward and effective. He noted that they often receive many unsuitable applications, but working with Opportunity North Somerset meant only strong, relevant candidates were put forward.

Katie summed up her experience powerfully: “I feel this is the only real opportunity I have ever had in life. I am now doing a job I love and can see progression.”

Her journey is a brilliant example of what can be achieved when the right support, training, and employer understanding come together – and a testament to Katie’s determination to build a future she’s proud of.
