Making Tax Digital for Income Tax – Are You Ready?
From 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords with a qualifying income of over £50,000 will be required to use Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax. This replaces the existing annual Self Assessment tax return with quarterly digital submissions to HMRC.
If you’re affected, you’ll need to register yourself, as this is not automatic, and choose HMRC-compatible accounting software before the deadline. HMRC has begun sending letters to those in scope, but we’d encourage all sole traders and landlords to check their eligibility now rather than wait. The income threshold drops to £30,000 in April 2027 and £20,000 in April 2028, so even if you’re not required to act just yet, it’s worth getting ahead of the changes. For step-by-step guidance on what you need to do, visit the GOV.UK Making Tax Digital page: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/making-tax-digital-for-income-tax-for-businesses-step-by-step
