“Call us Silicon Somerset” – as more companies win prestigious Royal award

Four companies in Somerset were announced earlier this year as winners of the King’s Award for Enterprise – the most prestigious business award in the country. And the winners reinforce Somerset’s growing reputation as a hub for innovation.

The King’s Award for Enterprise recognises outstanding success in innovation, international trade, sustainable development, and the promotion of opportunities through social mobility. Locally, they are run by the Somerset Lieutenancy, which represents the Royal Family in the county.

Lord-Lieutenant Mohammed Saddiq said: “These companies are leading the way, not just in the UK but on the global stage. Their achievements reflect Somerset’s potential to become a true hub of innovation. With so many tech companies finding success here, maybe it’s not too early to talk about Silicon Somerset.”

This year’s winners

1. Shearwell Data (Wheddon Cross, Somerset)

As one of the leading companies in livestock identification and management systems, Shearwell Data has revolutionised the farming industry with cutting-edge technology. Its innovative tracking systems are helping farmers worldwide streamline their operations, ensure better livestock health, and improve agricultural efficiency.

Specialising in safety-critical embedded systems, Wittenstein is making waves in the tech world with its high-integrity software solutions. Its products are used in industries where reliability is key, including aerospace, defence, and medical devices, contributing to safer and more secure systems globally.

3. Viper Innovations Ltd (Portishead, North Somerset)

Known for its work in electrical integrity solutions for subsea and railway industries, Viper Innovations has developed technology that improves system reliability and reduces costs for companies operating in extreme environments. Its focus on sustainable technology and engineering innovation has brought the company global recognition.

4. John Packer Ltd (Wellington, Somerset)

A leader in the manufacture and distribution of musical instruments, John Packer Ltd has gained a strong reputation internationally, supplying musicians, schools, and orchestras across the globe. The company’s commitment to high-quality craftsmanship and customer service has earned it recognition in the trade sector.

Royal recognition and tangible benefits

The winners will now be invited to a Royal reception and will be able to display the King’s Award flag at their premises, as well as use the award logo on their marketing materials for five years.

Previous winners have spoken about the tangible benefits the award can bring. ‘Atlantas Marine’ in Yeovil, which designs and manufactures underwater cameras and equipment, won the award last year.

Founder and Managing Director Charlie Foll said it had already boosted business at home and abroad. “It’s thrown a bright spotlight on the company and has lifted our whole profile and enabled us to create new jobs in Yeovil.”

Somerset’s tech revolution

With seven of the last 10 King’s Award winners in Somerset being technology companies, it is becoming increasingly clear that the region is cultivating a dynamic environment for high-tech businesses to thrive.

Mr Saddiq added, “From embedded software to livestock management systems, the county is demonstrating that innovation knows no geographical boundaries. The county has already proven it can foster world-class innovation, and with continued support for education, infrastructure, and business development, the future of Silicon Somerset looks bright.”
