The Stable Games Room Shortlisted for Prestigious Community Pub Hero Award

19th February 2025

Weston-super-Mare’s The Stable Games Room has been shortlisted for the Community Pub Hero Awards 2025, a national recognition of pubs making a significant impact in their local communities. Organised by PubAid in partnership with the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group and supported by Matthew Clark, the awards celebrate pubs that go the extra mile to support their communities.

Since opening, The Stable Games Room has been more than just a pub – it’s a community hub, fostering inclusivity, connection, and wellbeing through board games and social activities. Part of The Stable, the pub stands out as a welcoming space for all, including individuals benefiting from social prescribing, mental health support, and neurodiverse-friendly environments.

As Weston-super-Mare’s first board game pub, The Stable Games Room provides a unique, family-friendly atmosphere where customers can enjoy an extensive library of hundreds of board games at no extra cost. Unlike many board game cafes, it charges no table hire, ensuring accessibility for everyone. The venue is also home to a variety of community events, including:

  • Gaming clubs & tournaments (Catan, Dungeons & Dragons, Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!)
  • Social groups (chess club, crafting groups, book clubs, language meetups)
  • Mental health & wellbeing initiatives (men’s mental health clubs, gaming for seniors, sensory-friendly sessions)
  • Educational & creative workshops (street art sessions, cosplay workshops, ‘How To’ seminars)
  • Community Warm Space sessions, offering a welcoming place for those needing company and support.

The Stable Games Room is part of The Stable, a not-for-profit community interest company that reinvests profits into social impact projects, such as Stable Foundations, which provides training and employment opportunities for individuals facing barriers to work. The pub also works closely with local charities, social enterprises, and grassroots initiatives, ensuring that every pint poured supports a bigger purpose.

Jemma Coles, founder of The Stable and The Stable Games Room, said:
“We’re absolutely thrilled to be shortlisted for the Community Pub Hero Awards! The Stable Games Room is not just a pub – it’s a space where people connect, learn, and feel at home. Our team works hard to create an environment that’s welcoming to everyone, and it’s fantastic to see that recognised on a national level.”

The winners of the Community Pub Hero Awards 2025 will be announced at a special event in Parliament later this year. Regardless of the outcome, The Stable Games Room remains committed to championing community spirit and providing an inclusive space for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together through the joy of gaming.
