Stormwater Management Market
Our UK Stormwater Division is leading the way in the provision of integrated water management solutions and proprietary sustainable drainage systems. We offer a range of innovative products for the control, storage, treatment and re-use of stormwater and in the most cost-effective and environmentally sustainable fashion.
Urban runoff presents a number of challenges, in terms of both its quality and quantity. The natural environment has a capacity to absorb and control the transfer rate of stormwater. However, when this is replaced with impermeable surfaces (for example, roads and car parks), runoff rates can be increased significantly and the amounts and type of mobilised pollutants changed.
Hydro is responsible for developing the useful and informative web resource – Engineering Nature’s Way (www.engineeringnaturesway.co.uk). Engineering Nature’s Way promotes the use of the most appropriate techniques to mimic the natural paths and processes of surface water, from source to sea favouring ‘at source’ solutions and a catchment philosophy to controlling flow, volume and quality.
Wastewater Management Market
Hydro International’s wastewater products and systems provide innovative and proven solutions for high-performance, cost-effective and energy-efficient wastewater and drinking water treatment. Hydro also offers some of the world’s most advanced grit removal solutions.
Our own proprietary solutions are complemented by the best technologies selected from around the world to provide a comprehensive range of products. With applications from small satellite and industrial sites to large municipal treatment works, our range spans all treatment stages from inflow protection and screening to sludge treatment, final polishing and discharge.
Research and Development
Hydro conducts laboratory research out of its facilities in Clevedon, England and Portland, Maine, USA.
The Portland facility is the Hydro Group's centre for Water Quality analysis. This world class facility has the capacity to evaluate full-scale equipment at treatment flows in excess of 170 l/s (6 cfs). The Clevedon facility is the centre for the Group's Water Quantity research. This facility is equipped with the most sophisticated flow measuring equipment that delivers accurate readings under the most turbulent of conditions.
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
CFD plays an important role in Hydro's customer service and R&D programme. In addition to furthering Hydro's level of customer service and aiding the R&D programme, Hydro also uses its CFD expertise to advise leading regulatory agencies, industry experts and academic institutions in the stormwater and wastewater industries.
Hydro has become an internationally recognized expert in CFD technology. Through the use of CFD, Hydro was the first to uncover and demonstrate pollutant washout in stormwater treatment chambers - the phenomenon by which intense runoff flows cause enough turbulence to wash previously captured pollutants back into the watercourse.
Many of the technical papers authored by Hydro International's researchers have used CFD to predict and validate the performance of the company's innovative technologies.
Hydro has won various awards over the years, from technical innovation and business achievement, to contributions to the environment and sustainability.
More recently, the White Cart Water Flood Prevention Scheme that utilised five of the world’s largest ever Hydro-Brake® Flow Controls, was the winner of the 2012 British Construction Industry Award.
Hydro International’s Engineering Nature’s Way initiative was ‘Highly Commended’ by the Chartered Institute of Marketing 2012 Constructors Marketing Awards, recognising excellence in PR, Marketing and Communications in the construction industry.
