Lovely Drinks, Barrow Gurney
Lovely Drinks is an award-winning artisan producer of sparkling soft drinks and juices. Inspired by the bounty of Somerset’s orchards and hedgerows, their mission is to produce drinks using the highest quality ingredients they can find, sourced locally or within the South West wherever possible.
They make their drinks from handpicked elderflowers, lemons, fresh ginger, pressed West Country apples, raspberries and blackcurrants and other English fruits and flowers. Their drinks are free from preservatives, artificial flavourings and concentrates.
Established in 2008 in Barrow Gurney near Bristol, Lovely Drinks began in Rick Freeman’s garden shed using elderflowers from nearby fields. With his partner Victoria Earle he built a hobby into a thriving and profitable business and Lovely Drinks now supplies a range of quintessentially English soft drinks to high-quality independent cafes, bars, restaurants, delis, farm shops and pubs. Much of their business is still in Bristol and Somerset but they now supply Devon, Cornwall, Dorset, the Cotswolds, London, the Midlands and Manchester. They also export to the EU and the Middle East.
Their drinks have won 11 Great Taste Awards and they were finalists in 2015’s West Daily Press Food & Farming Awards. Thanks to a West of England Regional Growth Fund in 2015 they have bought new equipment and will soon hire a full-time production assistant. They expect to double turnover in 2015/16.
Owner Rick Freeman said, “North Somerset is the ideal location for us as a company. We are very near to two ‘foodie’ cities, Bristol and Bath, where a lot of our business is. We also have easy access to the M5, enabling us to reach customers in the Cotswolds, Devon and Cornwall.
“The council’s Economic Development department has championed us and we have had invaluable help from Trading Standards on labelling and related aspects of our business. There is a lot of support for food and drink producers here and that looks set to increase, which is great news for us.”
